Advice for Selecting a professional

Skills. You may incorrectly think of bookkeeping as one particular skill. In fact, there are many different skills. Most bookkeepers have a few specialties. There is a wealth of specific knowledge which may be necessary for bookkeeping for your business. For example: a big hair salon in Marin selling many products and renting out chairs to lots of stylists has very different bookkeeping needs from a sole proprietor tech consultant in San Francisco, or a nonprofit with government contracts to provide childcare in Contra Costa, Alameda and Santa Clara.

Experience. Some of our members have newly chosen the field of bookkeeping. Others have been in the field for a lifetime and supervise and train other bookkeepers. By having a mix of experience levels in our network, we keep each other aware of both the time-tested best practices and the new innovations in our field.

Team Approach. Although our network answers questions and provides training to members, if you hire one of our less experienced bookkeepers, we recommend having someone more experienced check their work (perhaps quarterly). This can lower your cost and at the same time make sure there are no mistakes being made. Having more than one person review bookkeeping is a best practice, anyway! A team not only is more likely to find errors and omissions, but also helps prevent and detect theft.
